Loaves and Fishes Receives Support from Corporate and Private Foundations
Raleigh - Even with the economic downturn, Loaves and Fishes, Inc.
(LAF), a nonprofit organization providing long-term, holistic support to
Raleigh's high-risk children through after-school and family support
programs, has received new gifts from several corporate and private
foundations during the past year.
In mid-2002, the Stewards Fund, a private family foundation, awarded LAF
with a $30,000 matching grant. LAF raised $32,000 from new sources
during a four month period in order to qualify for the match. In
addition to the matching funds, The Stewards Fund gave the organization
$40,000 to put toward general operations - a total gift of $70,000 for
2002.
In winter 2002, LAF received $15,000 from the American Airlines Children
Are Something Special Fund and the Triangle Community Foundation. The
money will go to support the organization's four major programs: EagerBeavers (Grades K - 2); Study Buddies (Grades 3 - 5); Champs (Grades 6 -8); and Stars (Grades 9 - 12).
In mid-2002, the Junior League of Raleigh presented LAF with $8,000 to
support the LAF Enrichment Program, a daily activity for all age groups
designed to expose them to the arts and enhance creative expression.
Past activities have included karate lessons, African drumming, dancing,
and arts & crafts. The Junior League's target area for giving is
"Promising Youth: Changing Lives Through the Power of Education." LAF
has also recently received grants from the Hillsdale Fund ($5,000) and
the Raleigh Kiwanis Foundation ($4,000) to support the Enrichment
Program.
Julia Crump, an African-American benefactor, requested that money from
her estate be used to help children. LAF received a gift of $5,000 from
a private fund recently established upon her death."
"We are blessed to have such widespread support from our community,"
said Jan Ross, LAF board president. "We have always worked very hard to
keep our focus on the children we serve, hoping that others would catch
this vision and work alongside us. I am pleased to say that many are
joining with us, and for that we are sincerely grateful."
