Champs (Grades 6-8)

Loaves and Fishes offers a daily program to provide academic and social support with a focus on peer interaction and middle school concerns for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students.  Academic help, social support, and opportunities for creative expression are provided daily for the Champs in order to promote school success and encourage their attention to special interests and skills as they prepare for high school.

Year in Review:

Anthony Saunders works with the Champs on academics. Anthony told us, “This year was very exciting for me and the Champs. This year we really focused on working with these middle school students on understanding different words that would allow them to read more and understand what they are reading. The kids worked really hard trying to improve their reading. We were also able to improve their math skills by using different math programs on the computer that allowed them to play math games and practice their different math facts at the same time. The games allowed the kids to have fun while they learned so the information wasn’t so boring to them after a long day at school. Academics really improved from the beginning of program until the end. Their report cards showed improvement in their Language Arts and Math classes. I am really excited about the direction the Champs are moving in with their work in academics. A special thanks to all the volunteers!”

Dana Williams worked with the Champs on enrichment activities. “I guess it is true, time flies when you’re having fun because that is exactly what we have been doing this year. Learning while having fun. This year we were privileged to have Karee Redman bring us the 4H SuperSeed Program. She came to LAF once a week to discuss topics that our youth are facing today. We talked about bullying, stress, peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, decision making, goal setting and much, much more. I truly enjoyed the honesty and helpful conversations the students had with one another. I also ap Karee Redman from 4-H poses with Dana and the Champs in their new SuperSeed shirts! preciated how patient and understanding the group was while dealing with the dynamics of the group. Along with the great education SuperSeed provided we had Teens Against Aids come out for eight weeks and discuss making smart and safe decisions about sex. We also were fortunate to have a program on Conflict Resolution for several weeks. Our presenter did a great job preparing games that highlighted the reasoning behind settling conflict in a positive way. Part of our Conflict Resolution training was to do a Ropes Course at the Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Camp in Reidsville. If I have to say so myself, not only did the group do well, but we had a BLAST! The students encouraged each other, challenged themselves and had a wonderful time of team building. We still have some work to do but I do think lots of progress was made. This has been a great year and I am looking forward to the fall!
