Eager Beavers (Grades K-2)

Loaves and Fishes offers a daily program with a focus on nurturing, enrichment, and the development of academic and social skills for students in kindergarten, first and second grades.  We provide children with one-on-one assistance with homework and projects, and greatly encourage reading.  The Eager Beavers also have “Fun Friday” outings bimonthly during the school year.

Update:

Annie Bush said: Wow! Another year has passed, and SUM MER is HERE! There have been exciting things happening in Academics this year. Students have worked hard with complet ing homework and tutorials, as well as other assignments and projects that were given through out the year. First and foremost, I could not have run the K-5 classroom as smoothly without the help of dedicated volunteers and support from various donors. I would like to thank each and everyone for their continued sup port of the staff and students here at LAF. Looking back since the beginning of the year, I have seen them all grow tremendously not only academically, but physi cally and socially as well. Each student is unique in his/her own way. There were various obstacles that many of the students faced academically. Thankfully with them being placed in the program and working closely with their parents and school of fi cials, we were able to help them get through those obstacles successfully. Working with the Eager Beavers (K-2) has been such a plea sure. In academics, our daily routine included snack, Harambee, homework, tutorial and reading. In the beginning many of them were reluctant to complete tu torial because it was not part of their usual daily routine. As time went on, many of them were beg ging to go and compete the extra tutorial work. Ev ery other Friday we went on many different adventures through out the city of Raleigh. Some of our adventures included Krispy Kreme, NC Museum of History, NCSU Arboreteum, and PlaySpace just to name a few. Community Service was fun this year; I think that they now have the picture that it is more than picking up litter! Other things we have done this year included working with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, making teacher appreciation bags, visiting WakeMed Pediatric Unit, making placemats for a nursing home, and of course, litter clean up!

Academics

The Eager Beavers are currently taking timed math tests every day.  Each student is allowed one minute to complete as many problems as s/he can.  After their answers are checked, they use graphs to plot the total number of problems they completed and how many problems were missed.   Afterwards, they work on individualized assignments that pertain to their academic goals.  All Eager Beavers spend at least 15 minutes every day reading with a volunteer and then they each write for ten minutes in their journals.  They begin with a sentence starter such as “My favorite ice cream flavor is…” “When I grow up, I want to be…” or “My brother/sister helps me…” Kindergartners write one sentence, first graders write three sentences, and second graders write five sentences. If they have time left over, they draw a picture or write more.  Overall, everyone seems to enjoy the program and is quickly learning the routines and procedures.

Enrichment

This fall the Eager Beavers will focus on naming and understanding some very important feeling words.  We will do activities around feelings such as happy, sad, mad, embarrassed, scared, safe, proud, ashamed, jealous, thankful, nervous, and relaxed.  We will be thinking about the feeling words and the situations in which we may experience them, in addition to learning strategies for controlling and releasing feelings.  In the coming months, the Eager Beavers will be learning more specific skills such as accepting “no,” apologizing, being a good listener, manners, bragging, honesty, tattling, sharing, and accepting differences.  This energetic group is also looking forward to a number of outings that will allow them to explore their community!

Community Service

Community Service is a very important activity for the Eager Beavers because it gives them the opportunity to learn while giving to others.  Last year the Eager Beavers picked up litter in the churchyard and in local parks.  They learned that every little bit helps to keep our community clean, and they also learned about recycling and the types of materials that are recyclable. This year, they will have the opportunity to learn more about our global community through the Read to Feed Program.
