Why is Loaves and Fishes Important?

Promoting educational success…

Children and youth who regularly attend high-quality after-school programs have:

  • better grades and conduct in school,

  • more academic and enrichment opportunities and,

  • better peer relations and emotional adjustment

  • Nearly 100% of LAF students have entered middle school either on grade level or in an appropriate special education placement.

  • 32% of 4th graders in North Carolina are not considered proficient in reading and math

  • Significant increases in reading achievement for students participating in programs that provided extra time in reading instruction by tutoring children individually.

  • LAF provides both supervised time for completing homework as well as additional one-on-one tutorial sessions.

  • Teens who do not engage in after-school activities are five times more likely to be "D" students than teens who do.

Working together with schools, families, and the community…

  • The benefits to children whose parents are involved in the educational process are well known, and include both academic and social success.

  • Only 36% of employed parents help their children with homework daily.

  •  LAF promotes collaboration between staff, teachers, and parents to maximize a child’s potential for success.

  • 95 percent of teens said it is important to be involved in the community through volunteering time to community efforts.

  • LAF provides community service opportunities for all of the students, all the way from kindergarten to graduation!

  • Every dollar invested in after-school programs will save taxpayers approximately $3 because of a reduced need for remedial education and grade repetition.

  •  LAF is supported with the help of local businesses, churches, foundations, civic organizations, and individuals in the community!

 Providing A Safe, Supportive Environment…

  • 87% of working mothers say the hours after school are when they are most concerned about their children's safety.

  • Violent juvenile crime is most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., and youth are more likely to smoke, drink or do drugs during these hours.

  •  In a survey of police chiefs, 86% felt that expanding after school programs would reduce youth crime and violence.

  • LAF operates during the school year, four days a week, from 3:00pm until 6:45pm. Summer camp for some students are provided as well.

  • LAF educates students about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and offers a safe place to talk about issues of peer pressure in weekly groups for middle and high school students.
