Kindergarten to High School...

Ebony Mercer
High School Graduate

Ebony Mercer has truly set the example, not only for her three brothers and two sisters but also for her extended siblings at Loaves and Fishes. I have watched what once was a shy, timid little girl grow up to be a well spoken, uplifting, intelligent, goal minded, determined, young lady. I have been a part of her journey here at Loaves and Fishes and have truly enjoyed the ride. Ebony has always been a great student. No matter what obstacle came her way, she would remain positive. Any work you asked her to do, you could guarantee it would be neat and precise. I can also count on her to do the right thing even when no one is looking because being trust worthy is a trait that she wants to carry. Although she’s had to work hard to stay focused and ahead, she’s done it with little to no complaints. I say all these things just to let you know she has truly earned all the great things she has coming her way.

We have all been so excited about Ebony Mercer this year because she has been a student at Loaves and Fishes since she was in kindergarten. Ebony graduated from Southeast Raleigh High School on May 26, 2006 and we are thrilled that she has been accepted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill!

At our end of the year celebration, Ebony read something she had written to her fellow students about Loaves and Fishes. Here is some of what she wrote: “My journey as a student at Loaves and Fishes began thirteen years ago. I was here when my mom dressed me in polka-dot shirts and stirrup pants. I was here when all the kids that were in LAF lived in Halifax Court. I remember when we got on a plane and flew to Disney World and I can’t forget the trips to Emerald Pointe Water Park or having fun with the staff. There are so many fun days to think of, but there are also those days when you would rather be at home running around with your friends or watching TV or just sleeping. We all have those days but we get past them because we know that there are plenty of kids who wish they were in our place. Because in our place we have so many advantages. We have so many opportunities presented to us to get us to that higher level. We have so many people who actually care and want to see us succeed. That is why I stayed here until the end. Once in a while, you should just stop and say “Thank You” and show your appreciation. Because, with the help of Loaves and Fishes, Kendra went to NC Central, Anqwan went to NC A&T and I am going to Carolina! Where are you going to go?”

Many people offered loving support to Ebony in the last thirteen years….

On behalf of Ebony and all of our students, Thank You!
