Volunteer Profile

Tutorial Volunteers

Six very special volunteers are making an impact on the children’s academic progress this year by serving as K-5 tutorial volunteers. Each has been trained by Nancy Newell in a structured tutorial program adapted from the methodology and skills used at the Hill Center. These dedicated volunteers are Elsie Eads, Kelly Ruff, Barbara Turner, Betty Jordan, Carol Jones, and Verna Riley.

These five tutors also helped in the assessment process at the beginning of the school year. Thanks to them, we now know exactly what each child needs to work on. Notebooks have been prepared for each child by Annie Bush with the appropriate work determined by the assessment.

This tutorial program is individualized with each student performing exactly the same tasks at his or her skill level.  Each day there is a timed math drill, an oral drill on phonics, and a word attack drill in which the student uses acquired phonetic skills to decode words. All students are expected to reach the level of mastery before advancing in each category.

Elsie, Kelly, Barbara, Betty, Carol and Verna have made a long-term commitment to this program because they really want to see good things happen for the children and they know how important it is for them to acquire good skills in reading and math. We are most grateful for their commitment and hope that others will sign up to help us fill six more hours a week of tutoring. Nancy will provide regular training throughout the year and Annie will provide outgoing support.

Margie Pipkin

… is currently in her second term and 5th year as a vivacious and energetic member of our Board of Directors at LAF. She immediately joined the Fund Development Committee and has been chair of that committee for the last two years. She works tirelessly to find new and creative ways to promote Loaves and Fishes and to help us raise much needed funds!

Margie is also very involved as a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church and is on the Presbyterian Church (USA) Foundation Board. She is a passionate reader and a member of two book clubs as well as the Raleigh Fine Arts Society. She and her husband, Ash, have one son, Andy, who lives in Cary and has helped greatly with our computers, and a daughter, Claire, who lives in Boston. "I believe strongly in what is going on at Loaves and Fishes. Working with the children is very important. Loaves and Fishes makes a big difference in the lives of the families we serve," Margie replied when asked why she gives her time to LAF. She is very proud of the foundation that Betty Anne Ford and Nancy Newell developed and is excited about what the future has in store for Loaves and Fishes.
